The 2025 Game Awards have come and gone, with Clair Obscur taking away a bulk of the nominations. The Sandfall Interactive developed game won a record setting 9 categories, besting The Last of Us II's 7 trophies. Along with Game of The Year prize (beating out rather stiff competition in Hades II, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Kingdom Com: Deliverance, and Donkey Kong Bananza hardware Expedition 33 ran to the bank with includes:
Best Game Direction
Best Narrative
Best Art Direction
Best Score and Music
Best RPG
Best Independent Game
Best Debut Indie Game
Best Performance (for Jennifer English)
With the concept originalized by former Ubisoft employee Guillaume Broche, who departed during the COVID-19 pandemic, founded Sandfall with friends and colleagues. The turn-based RPG was heavily inspired by the Persona and Final Fantasy series, taking great influence from them, and blending the combat mechanics with real time interactions that can trigger parrys, dodging, and "breaking" enemies to exploit weaknesses.
During his acceptance speech, Guillaume announced that as a "thank you", a new patch is available for FREE, which includes a new playable environment, new stories, some quality of life improvements, and a new photo feature. The popularity of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been monumental, and shows a shift in what dictates audience capture: a project developed with passion from a team that aimed to create something different has led to over 5 million sales, as of this writing.
