The impact the Left 4 Dead games has imprinted on fans of co-op FPSes remains prominent to this day. It still retains a very respectable player in 2025. In what may be some intriguing news to fans of the asymmetrical shooter style, there appears to be an effort at a spiritual successor in the works. Series creator Mike Booth took to Reddit in search of early playtesters for a project that hearkens back to the team-based style Left 4 Dead popularized.
Hey everyone,
I’m Mike Booth (creator of Left 4 Dead), and I’m excited to share that I’m working on a brand new project —a 4-player co-op shooter built on the foundations of what made L4D special.
If you enjoyed the teamwork, tension, and replayability of my past games, you’ll probably find this one interesting. It expands on the co-op formula in ways I’ve wanted to explore for a long time.
We’re still in the early stages of development, but we’re opening up playtests to a limited number of players. If you’re interested in joining us on this next adventure and helping shape the game early on, we’d love to have you involved.

A creative influence for Team Fortress and the Counter-Strike games, Booth left Turtle Rock in 2012. He currently works at Bad Robot Games, the video game branch of J.J. Abrams' company Bad Robot Productions. It may be a stretch to call Left 4 Dead a "dormant" franchise. Perhaps it's two games that accomplished exactly what they needed. Or at the very least, Valve has no interest in developing a new entry.
There have been a number of attempts to recapture the magic of the series, most notably 2021's Back 4 Blood (developed by Turtle Rock) and Saber Interactive's World War Z from 2019. Would you be interested in a new Left 4 Dead-style game? You can leave your thoughts on our front page.
