With an already large ensemble of personalities (41 characters as of this writing), Marvel Rivals has already established a sizable window of opportunities for additions. Will NetEase's team-based hero shooter see original characters added to the roster? This appears to be a very viable opportunity.
According to an interview with MP1st, an intriguing response was issued from game director Guagngguang. The publication brought up the topic of the television shows and Marvel projects, would the idea of a completely original character design be on the table?
“Yes, we are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals.” When pressed on what that entails, Guangguang simply stated, "stay tuned".
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, and how the fan reception will be gauged. Original characters in ensemble fighters are far from a new concept. In recent memory, Reindog was a completely original roster addition for the now defunct platform fighter Multiversus. Even going back to Soul Calibur II, the multi-platform releases on console saw guest characters like The Legend of Zelda's Link for the GameCube version, Tekken's Heihachi Mishima for the PlayStation 2, and the Xbox port saw the inclusion of Necrid, an original fighter designed by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane.
