  • Developers Beethoven and Dinosaur paid extra for musical rights

  • Mixtape does not feature Streamer Mode

  • The soundtrack will never expire

Mixtape has endured quite the experience since the game's May 7th launch. Developed by Beethoven and Dinosaur, the narrative-driven game has received a tremendous amount of praise, along with its share of detractors. This has made conversations about the title more controversial than the game itself actually is.

Not getting into a lot of those details, as the subject of today regards the licensed soundtrack that drives Mixtape's narrative. Stacey Rockford is a very music obsessed teen who has dreams of leaving her small lagoon town to New York to become a music supervisor, so her and her friends enjoy one last night of adventure before embarking on their separate ways.

The game plays out in a series of mini vignettes, accompanied by a song that fits the particular tone a scene is aiming for, featuring hits from Devo, The Cure, Silverchair, and The Smashing Pumpkins. As it were, music is very key to how the tone is set. Conversations began making their rounds on social media that the rights will expire for Mixtape. This discourse was cleared up by game director Johnny Galvatron in an interview with Kotaku, as they paid extra for the licenses to be secured in perpetuity.

“My biggest hesitation was like, ‘if I make a game with all of my favorite songs, is it gonna be like starting a business with my friends? Am I gonna hate everything by the end?’ And no, I don’t."

Annapurna, Mixtape's publisher, forwardly addressed the concerns about the rights disappearing in another article dispelling the rumors shared by GoNintendo, in very blunt terms.

We heard some people say MIXTAPE would be delisted due to music licenses expiring.

That was a lie.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Once again, as music heavily influences the story being told, Beethoven and Dinosaur opted not to include Streamer Mode in Mixtape, so chances are the copyrighted music will lead to rights and usage violations for players streaming the game. Hi-Fi Rush, for example, has Streamer Mode to mute the licensed music utilized throughout the rhythm action game.

Mixtape is currently available for the Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Windows.
