During the 2025 Video Game Awards, a trailer for the new Street Fighter movie was revealed, along with an on-stage gathering of the actors portraying the World Warriors from Capcom's iconic tournament fighter. This seemingly unreal cast includes Andrew Koji, WWE superstars Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, Callina Liang, Eric Andre, Noah Centineo, David Dastmalchian, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Jason Mamoa, Vidyut Jammwal, and Andrew Schulz. This film's overall tone seems very tongue-in-cheek, completely self-aware of its nature. The vibes are reminiscent of the Anaconda movie, starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd. If the plans are to outdo the silliness of the critically panned, but retrospectively enjoyable 1994 Street Fighter movie with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late Raul Julia, then new comes a new challenger, indeed.

As one of the headliners marking the event, it was the comments from Dan Hibiki actor and comedian Andrew Schulz who threw an unprovoked jab at the Mortal Kombat II movie.

“Guys, it’s so important that we appreciate you all here for being great patrons of Street Fighter… This movie is not possible without you guys,” Schulz bantered. “We are so grateful. And we’re not the only game that appreciates your patronage. There’s another game out there. They also flew from around the world to be here because they appreciate you. So give it up for the whole cast of ‘Mortal Kombat 2’!”

Of course, the cast of MKII was not present at the event. Schulz, completely in troll mode, continues:

“I’m just kidding, I’m just kidding. They don’t care about you. They only care about money. We care about money and you. Street Fighter forever!”

The clip naturally made the social media rounds. @unCAGEDgamez on Twitter/X posted the moment with the caption The cast of the Street Fighter Movie just threw BIG shots at the Mortal Kombat Movie Kast at #TheGameAwards! Oh it's on! Todd Garner of Broken Road Productions, and one of the producers on Mortal Kombat 2, seemingly took umbrage with the comment, simply replying to the post "I don't climb over others to get ahead."

While taking umbrage with the initial joke, Garner perhaps saw it as lighthearted and harmless as time passed, as he replied to another poster stating, "I see we got a fight on our hands let's show them". To which the producer added, "I hope they are both huge".

Likely much ado about nothing, and a comedian merely going into business for himself to get a laugh, this all seemed to be in good fun that will likely lead to nothing other than two fanbases adding fuel to a fire that had seemingly been long extinguished. Despite the odds of a Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat video game coming to fruition are likely low, the two fighting game franchises were once pillars of 90's fighting games that was at the tip of many discussions on playgrounds and arcades about which one was better. These movies may be the only way that this "war" sees traction.

Street Fighter hits theaters October 16, 2026, and Mortal Kombat 2 debuts May 8th, 2026.
