Aliens: Fireteam Elite did not originally launch on the Switch. Originally released in 2021 on the PlayStation and XBox family of systems (along with Windows), the Nintendo Switch version of the co-op multiplayer shooter had to wait, as the platform's hardware limitations made a port a little trickier to accommodate. A Cloud version was released in 2023 for $29.99 ($59.99 for the Ultimate version).
The game, however is now rendered permanently unplayable on the Nintendo Switch. On August 5th, the servers were officially shut down, meaning its reliance on Cloud connection is severed. According to Video Games Chronicle, Fireteam Elite was delisted on the Nintendo eShop earlier in 2026. Since the announcement of its delisting, there was never a reason provided by Nintendo or the developer Cold Iron Studios. Perhaps the aging Switch hardware was deemed no longer worth running, as a sequel has been announced and on its way at the end of August.

Granted, a sequel is designed to entice players from the older game and migrate to the succeeding title. But decommissioning a piece of software that consumers paid for to access is another standing issue in the modern age. The questioning of game ownership gets more convoluted, as publishers, rights holders, and developers carve more into the rights that video game fans have. Digital gaming is concerning enough, but reliance on Cloud service essentially means your ownership hangs in the balance of how long the servers are available, and it's always finite.
