  • Sega aims to place spotlight on their more dormant IPs

  • New website will place an emphasis on multimedia and apparel for classic series

A lot of Sega's success with video game software has come from recent IPs, such as Metaphor ReFantazio, the Persona series, and even reviving classic names, like Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. Sonic has also been a ubiquitous figure with the popularity of three movies, and a fourth one on the way (hitting theaters March 19th 2027, as well as Sonic Racing Crossworlds. While keeping an eye on the future, the brand is also planning to acknowledge its past.

It looks like Sega is gearing up bring attention to its more dormant and older legacy IPs with the launching of the Sega Universe Initiative website.

Games and characters born in the past continue to live on in the same world, transcending generations and borders. Beyond games, they expand into film, music, fashion, and even further forms of entertainment. While the form changes, the experience is constantly updated. Everything created here remains in someone's memory and is passed on to the next generation.

Based on the site's design, it appears to be the early workings of a virtual museum where fans can read about a lot of the titles that gained Sega notariety back in the 90's, as well as listen to music, view artwork, and explore trivia. In the section listed Sega Titles, the current lineup of games are:

  • Fantasy Zone

  • Outrun

  • Streets of Rage

  • Rent A Hero

  • Guardian Heroes

  • NiGHTS

  • Dynamite Deka

  • Sakura Wars

  • SGGG

The Sega Universe Initiative site is not particularly confirmation that Sega is planning new games in any of these series, though Sega has confirmed new entries are in the works for IPs like Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi. There are also multimedia projects in the works for Sega properties like Eternal Champions (Skydance), a television show for Golden Axe produced by Comedy Central, and a Streets of Rage film adaptation written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad.

And when it comes to apparel and paraphernalia, the Sega Store in Tokyo opened in July of 2025. Local to Japan, but the Sega Universe site potentially will provide apparel featuring the Sega names of the past. More to follow on this development, as there is a rich history of Sega software that could be included. I ponder, whatever happened to that "SuperGame"?
