For the first time ever, SEGA will launch a retail store dedicated to the selling of physical goods of their beloved franchises and characters. An event was held in Shanghai, China the day before the store's opening. Along with Sonic The Hedgehog, memorabilia from other popular Sega franchises and IPs are for commercial grabs, such as the Persona series, Metaphor ReFantazio, and Puyo Puyo. Cosplayers and fans attended, celebrating the occasion, as the store officially opened on May 1st. The flagship location is established within the Bailian ZX Chuangqu Plaza, a popular shopping district in the heart of Shanghai.
"We'd like to deliver the charms of Sega to many people in Shanghai, where game culture takes root," Sega Corp. President Shuji Utsumi told the press at the event.
According to Chinese media, its burgeoning economy saw a 40% increase in consumer goods, estimated at 168.9 billion yuan ($23 billion). With 65 years of presence, Sega expanding the access of its intellectual properties in physical retail, further diversifying its brand beyond the video games and movies. Goods featured will include unique locally designed merchandise, gaming experience corners, and immersive photo spots. Sega has stated that its goal is to bridge gaps between fans, and transcend geographical and generational boundaries.
It is a little surprising that the first Sega Store is not based in the Land of the Rising Sun, considering that Japan was the home of the iconic Sega Game Center Building 4 in Akihabara, which shuttered its doors in 2022. Japanese fans won't have to wait too long, however, as Tokyo will receive a SEGA Store in Shibuya Parco department complex, in the Summer of 2025.
Could there be a chance of a Sega Store expanding westward? Given the state of the United States trade policies, slim to none for the time being.
