Nintendo has confirmed the filming of the Legend of Zelda Movie is underway with filming. Back in November 2023, it was revealed that a big screen adaptation of the company's flagship adventure game was set to begin development, with co-financing handled by Sony Pictures. A Nintendo game partly funded by Sony? Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria.
With principal photography taking place in Wellington, New Zealand, we get our first look at the lead actor and actresses in costume. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason were cast as Link and the titular Zelda, respectively. Shigeru Miyamoto has taken on a producer role, and posted on Nintendo of Japan's social media platform, along with our first look at the two leads donning signature looks of Nintendo's iconic characters.
This is Miyamoto. We have officially begun filming the live-action movie adaptation of "The Legend of Zelda" in the magnificent great outdoors, together with Bo Bragason, who plays Zelda, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who plays Link. The filming is progressing smoothly, so I would appreciate it if you could quietly watch over us. The theatrical release is scheduled for May 7, 2027. Please wait just a little longer.

While there is a strong chance this adaptation will be its own original story, the likenesses of Bo and Benjamin seem vaguely based on the Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom character designs. With only this to go on (and it isn't necessarily a lot), it certainly looks promising, if just going on optics. The success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie likely provides a strong vote of confidence regarding this project. A Legend of Zelda film has been talked about in fan circles for the longest time, and now is the perfect time for this to come to fruition; video games are more universally accepted today than in any point in history, along with a more robust focus on quality assurance.
The Legend of Zelda film is set to wrap up filming in April of 2026, with a worldwide theatrical release May 7th 2026.
