PlayStation is back in the news circles once again, and for the wrong reasons. Just barely a month after raising the base price of all PS5 hardware, prices are going to get a little bit higher for PlayStation Plus subscription members. The new prices have come into effect immediately in the United States and the UK, and will hit the Extra and Premium tiers as well. These will affect new PS Plus subscribers, so if you're already a member, the new change will not apply to your account unless you alter your membership.
The new prices for 1 Month go from:
Essential: $9.99 > $10.99 (UK: £6.99 > £7.99)
Extra: $14.99 > $16.99 (UK: £10.99 > £11.99)
Premium: $17.99 > $19.99 > £13.49 > £14.99)
New prices for 3 Months will go from:
Essential: $24.99 > $27.99 (UK: £19.99 > £21.99)
Extra: $39.99 > $43.99 (UK: £31.99 > £34.99)
Premium: $49.99 > $54.99 (UK: £39.99 > £43.99)
PS Plus yearly memberships will remain the same for all three tiers, though countries like Australia have reported a price hike across all tiers and lengths.
While Sony would attribute the price changes to the uncertain economy, along with global memory shortages due to the A.I. data demands, it's very likely that these are means to push PS Plus subscribers to the annual memberships. With customers being priced out for new hardware, PlayStation 5 consoles are having a hard time moving off shelves with a 46% decline in sales. PlayStation will hope the giant releases like Grand Theft Auto VI will boost interest and sales. According to their most recent financial report, the PlayStation brand has made profit on PS Plus subscriptions. Will these price changes see a turn for the better or worse for Sony?
